My Knuckle Got Lonely

New York has largely defined the woman I have become today. It's possible that one day we will live far off in another land, and I will look at my NY inspired ink, and be reminded of the ole days.  But for now, I wear them proudly in my city streets.  Also, The New York Yankees were a huge part of my childhood, and I have carried on the tradition into adulthood.  Living in the city, also makes it much easier to see games at the stadium!  I watch MLB from April to September, always with the glimmer of hope that my team continues into October.  I'm always working on a home project, cleaning or organizing while the game is on.  Sometimes I pay attention with such intensity, but I can also just keep an eye on my team while multitasking.

Phil Rizzuto was a constant voice in my home during the hot summers in upstate New York.  Don Mattingly was my 80's hero that could never be, and the stories of the players before my time made The New York Yankees seem like gods of sport.  So I thought it would be fitting to honor the player of my generation, #2 Derek Jeter.

I don't think I'm alone in getting inked at poignant or transitional times, and I noticed that I had consistently sat down in a chair right before I started a new job.  With no intentions of getting a big piece right away, the notion struck me before I started a 6 week gig, this past Spring.  I literally woke up that morning, and decided my Yankee knuckle tattoo was lonely.  I had the impulsive idea of a playing card heart with 2 small dots (for #2), just the thing to adorn the original knuckle perfectly!

I wanted to check out Daredevil's new location on Division Street anyway, so here was a reason.  I've been to the old shop 3 times in the past, (all great experiences) and thought this was simple enough that I would take any of the artists that were available. Kyle Markiewicz from St. Louis, MO was the guest artist that week, and I was very happy to have him give me this adornment!

Birthday Butterfly!

Another birthday, another tattoo...

My wonderful & amazing boyfriend, Ronnie took me to the Jersey Shore to celebrate my 35th birthday, last weekend.  Asbury Park has become our favorite local get-a-way, and we have shared many memories and celebrated anniversaries there - so we can always find an excuse to go!  We stay at a really unique modern renovation, The Hotel Tides & never pass up a meal at Langosta Lounge.

But the "must-do" when we visit the shore, is to make a stop into Electric Tattoo & visit my favorite guy, Tom Yak.  Saturday is "walk-in" day at the shop for all of the artists, but be sure to get there before noon - the list fills up quickly.  I asked Tom for more of the same, "American Traditional", bold and beautiful.  He always delivers clean lines & a design that will stand the test of time!  I love this piece, and I can't wait to keep going on my right sleeve.

The picture below is fresh ink in the shop, note the blood & red swollen area.

Healing nicely.... 5 days later.

Matching Sugar Skulls for Día de Muertos

I started a position at a new company this past Fall, after 10 years of commitment to my first "real" job after college.  This was a huge move for me professionally; I had become comfortable in my work life, despite all the chaos going on in my family and personal life.  This move was not only upward, but an opportunity to be a part of a new and growing organization.  I had a couple ideas in mind to "mark" this moment in time, but the 2nd week of my new adventure was overshadowed by Superstorm Sandy.

My long time friend Jeremiah, and I had talked forever about getting matching skulls.  I found this time to be the opportune moment to celebrate Día de Muertos.  There was a lot of suffering around us, but I could still feel the positive energy.  The city started pulling together just like another time Jeremiah and I knew all too well.

This was also an opportunity to get inked at Brooklyn Tattoo, owned by Adam Suerte.  His shop was running a Day of the Dead special, and this was our chance!  Patricia Mazza took care of Jeremiah first; with a larger, black & grey version of what I got.

It cost a little extra for the color, but worth it!  I love this piece on the inside of my right arm - once I fill the outer side, it will be time for more Salt & Pepper!

Salt & Pepper

After moving my main blog, StellaBella to wordpress in 2012, I forgot all about this little piece of documentation I had also been working on.  Here we are in 2013, and I have been tattooed since!  I spoke last about my 3rd and least favorite "Friday The 13th" tattoo.  Right before that one, I decided to tie my right arm together, with an American traditional technique called "Salt & Pepper".

More like dots, asterisks, and plus signs, it's the filler in between my favorite style of tattoo.  After watching myself on NY Ink, I noticed all of my negative space in particular.  I had been adding small pieces around my original piece, but now I needed some cohesion.  My main man, Tom Yak and I had talked about it before, so he was happy to start tying it together.  I also requested an LTD to forever remind me the name of the episode I was on.

My 3rd Friday the 13th & Tom Yak cover-up

The 13th year that I resided in NYC, was a year that included 3 Friday the 13th; which is rare.  I have participated in 2 Friday the 13th tattoo events - and I had it in my head that I should round it out with one more.

2012, like 2009, also includes 3 Friday the 13ths.  It landed in January, April, and July.  In January, Ronnie & I were in Boston, MA, and I struck out trying to find a shop participating.  In April, we were in Orlando, FL - need I say more, no shops around.  I did walk into the H&H shop on the Universal Walk and talk to the guys there, but I mean... come on.

So this July, when the day arrived again, I had to wait in the house for Time Warner to arrive all morning.  When there is a window of time, they always show up in the last quarter - Annoying.  Hand of Glory was not participating this time around, and I wasn't going to have time to get to Dare Devil, without being there all night.  I also had to be in Midtown by 6pm.  Let's just say, it was not going to go right - no matter what I did. I guess it was an unlucky day this time.

I found the list of 5 shops in Brooklyn that would be running the special, and I chose what I thought was the best flash piece.  It was a simple pair of traditional cherries, and I thought it would go nicely on the back of my right bicep.  I knew nothing of the shop listed previously, and I honestly didn't have a good feeling after walking into Gristle Tattoo that afternoon.  It looked brand new, and as if no one knew what was going on.   But I gave it a shot, if all else failed - I would go to my man, Tom Yak.  He would fix whatever mishap occurred... exactly what happened.

The above was the advertised flash, by the female artist in the shop, Brittany Bauza.  Since this shop was allowing the 18yo Jersey girls to get 2, count 'em 2 tattoos at a time... she was occupied.  This set of Jersey girls were coming from the other "new" shop down the street, that also allowed them to adorn themselves with 2 $13 pieces of garbage ink.  The shop manager handed me over to the guest artist instead.  This is what I ended up with:

I know, I know...what do you want for a $13 tattoo?  But I have participated in 2 other 13th events, and received clean line work, and shading.  Where is the shading?  As I was being tattooed I could feel his hand shaking, and knew the lines were not clean & barely scratched the surface.  I have enjoyed participating in the tradition of Friday the 13th in the past, (started by Oliver Peck in Dallas, TX) - I just need to be more selective in the future, I should not have rushed myself into this one...

I went to Electric Tattoo during our recent trip out to the Jersey Shore, and Tom fixed me up right!
All in all, tips included - this tattoo cost me $60, and I gained 2 Tom Yak t-shirts in the process.  It was done originally on Friday the 13th, but fixed during a great Holiday vacation!  I feel like my focus going forward will be on bigger pieces, and I have finished my fun with little fillers - who knows, I might want more later.
Thanks again Tom (and for the t's too!), looking forward to starting the back piece soon!

NY Ink Part II "Living The Dream"

Here is the photo from Megan Massacre's website.   The show aired on 2.16.2012, and my segment is the last one.  It has been an honor to be in the company of Ink tattoo customers such as Lloyd Banks, Anthony BourdainMethod Man, Marky Ramone, John Forté, and most recently Tito Puente, Jr!

Lefty & NY Ink, Part 1

If you're not following my main blog StellaBella, or on Twitter, Pinterest or Facebook, than you just don't know what you are missing!  I write about home/design stuff, love, travel and life in Brooklyn.  I keep the stories and photos original and my sister, Rachel and friend, Nicole have since joined the team! I have had to hold back, but I can't wait to share the exciting journey with everyone!

After a photo of my tattoo was featured in the NY Times this summer, I was sent a link to apply for a spot on the 2nd Season of NY Ink, on TLC.  Once you have more than a few tattoos, you start compiling a mental list of pieces you would like to get next, so it wasn't hard for me to chose one of those ideas that had a personal meaning behind it.  I filled out the form and sent it in. I forgot about it until I was contacted by TLC, auditioned, did an on-camera interview, and the next thing I knew I was being given the option of any artist at the Wooster Street Social Club to give me my tribute piece!  It was a whirlwind of unexpected events for sure!  I chose wisely, and we filmed the long process on one unforgettable day in October, while Reality TV occurred around me.  My story, and the beautiful tribute piece made it onto an episode which will air very soon, so stay tuned.

Here is my story that got me onto the show:

Once upon a time on a beautiful Brooklyn day; Jeremiah, Jeremy and I entered an antique shop on Flatbush Avenue.  The year was 2003, and we had no idea that walking into this store would bring a very special animal into all of our lives.  Jeremy saw these ceramic "hear no evil, see no evil" set of monkey lamps from the window, and insisted we go in to see how much they were priced at.  The owner tried hard to get us to take the grey one-eyed cat that showed up at his backdoor, 3 days prior.  "The lamp is $200, but that damn cat is  free!"  Jeremy went back the next day, and took her home.  Lefty was her name.

When Jeremiah and I moved into the infamous duplex, Jeremy gave Lefty to us - he was traveling often, we had more room, and there was always someone around, so it made sense.  Plus, a spiral staircase is like a built-in cat toy!  I liked having her around, but wasn't attached.  I didn't have many pets growing up, and you wouldn't really call me the biggest animal lover.  And she only pranced from room to room, perching herself in a window when she got the chance.  But when Jeremiah moved out, I was left as her only keeper - other friends and roommates came & left over the years, but Lefty became my responsibility.

One day, I came home from work to small puddles of water scattered over the hardwood floors, and no Lefty in sight.  It took me awhile to notice the small pieces of purple in some of the wetness, as I cleaned them up.  She had gotten into my new roommate's bag of wrapping paper, and purple grosgrain ribbon was all over the place.  I finally found her tucked away in an unlikely place & when she realized she had been spotted, cried with what seemed like all she had left.   She was in serious pain, and early the next morning I took her to the local Park Slope Vet Hospital, conveniently less than 2 blocks away.  After multiple tests, and finally surgery - 8 feet of tangled, purple ribbon was removed from Lefty's intestines!  I nursed her back to health over the next few weeks, and that was the beginning of our beautiful friendship.

We've had a strong bond ever since the surgery.  Lefty was there for me (as much as a pet can be) during the darkest, loneliest time in my life.  Being a single girl in her 20's living in NYC will make your skin tough.  My walls went up higher and higher after emotional scars and bruises hurt too much, or a lover's heartbreak burned too hot.  Friends didn't feel like real friends anymore, and meeting new people was a gamble, with odds stacked against me.  The city that I loved so much, made me feel very alone in the world at that time, as if everyone had turned their back.  No one to lend a helping hand, or had time to talk, and I felt like I was sinking into depression.  A "Quarter-Life Crisis" is what some call it, and lets just say it took alot of honest, introspective work to pull myself out of it.  At the end of each of these sad, lonely days - I would hear Lefty's "Meow" as I walked in the front door, and I knew someone still needed me.

Lefty in Jonathan Adler

Through these trying times, Lefty was my "Good Luck Charm".  She had obviously seen a few of her 9 live's flash before her, and she isn't a mean or nasty cat for the life she was dealt, missing the eye and all.   She's such a happy and friendly pet, and I wish I could understand her because she sure has alot to say!  Maybe, she wants to tell me how she lost the eye?  I wish I knew, all I hear is - Meow, mEow, meoOOOow!

Once I turned 30, things started to fall into perspective for me.  My priorities became more focused and I stopped worrying about the things that were out of my control.  I started to love myself again, and that is more important than anything.  To quote the glorious RuPaul,"If You Can't Love Yourself, How In The Hell Are You Gonna Love Someone Else?"  Amen.

On my recent trip to Spain, I picked up this t-shirt (below) for a friend, at a tattoo shop in Madrid.  This is when the idea came to me for a Lefty Tribute piece.  I love Japanese artwork, and they can transform into some beautiful tattoos, but I tend to collect more traditional American work.  The image on the t-shirt seemed to melt the "Good Luck Charm" aspect of the Maneki Neko prosperity cat, with a more modern, less Japanese look.  With Lefty's markings and one-eye - I thought this could definitely be one bad-ass tribute piece!

Lefty is still a very healthy and happy cat as we moved this summer to the Loft, and despite being a dog lover - Big Ronnie adores her!  I was glad I didn't wait until it was a memorial tattoo - she still has many more years in our family!  Stay tuned to TLC Thursday night @ 9pm to see my episode, the entire tattoo process, reality tv drama, and the amazing artwork that is finally unveiled!  Shout out to my make-up artist, Ashleigh Ciucci and stylist, Jeremiah Canonico.  I will post a Part II after the episode airs, pictures with the artist, and behind-the-scenes shots!

NY INK Interview & Taping

I auditioned "on-camera" this Thursday, September 22nd, 2011 for the 2nd Season of NY Ink.  I will find out in 2 weeks if they want to use me.  I signed tons of paper work and put my signature in alot of places, a little un-nerving.   After all of that, I thought it went well.  I wrote to the show after seeing Megan's dog piece that she did for a friend last season.  I have thought about an idea to honor my first pet, Lefty - the one-eyed wonder. After seeing that episode, I wanted to get it done sooner rather than later.  Lefty has been there with with me through alot, an I feel like we have come out of darkness together.  I love that cat, even though I wouldn't consider myself an animal lover.  She won me over with her 1-eyed handi-cat ways!  Anyway, I am anxiously awaiting the notification - it would be really cool to be on the show - I mean really cool!

UPDATE:

I just got a call that I made it to the final round of casting!  It is still possible that my tattoo won't make it to an episode, but I am filming this Monday, October 3rd!

New Yorkers Show Off Their Tattoos, NYTimes

I was reading this article, Thursday evening on NYTimes.com -

It was just a brief interview and story about the Season Finale of NY Ink, the spin-off to Ami James's Miami Ink show on TLC that would be airing later that night. There was a related questionnaire: New Yorkers, Show Off Your Ink! I decided to answer 2 or 3 questions, submit my favorite photo of my own New York Pride, one of my 2 Rotten Apples I got done in Seattle, WA by Thomas Graham @ SuperGenius, and thought nothing of it. The following Sunday, The New York Times ran this on its website, and a short related article in the Metropolitan Section, Page 8. As you can see, my photo was top pick, along with two others for the print article! Now when I go back to the original online article - I am the thumbnail to the Multimedia page & it's also on the NY/Region homepage! So exciting!

I give alot of credit to the photographer, although I never got his name.  I think it was chosen because of the contrasting background, and high resolution.  He was a film student and nephew to a friend, visiting from LA 2 summers ago.  He sent me this photo after a fun night of BBQ-ing and drinking!

My Swallows: Brooklyn, where I found home

I met my tattoo artist in 2002, when he was working at New York Adorned in the East Village.  Since then, Tom Yak has opened his own shop, Electric Tattoo in Bradley Beach a few miles from Asbury Park, NJ.  I am devoted to his classic artwork and solid lines, and wanted to keep my right arm consistent.

Fresh out of the shop - April 23, 2011

The swallow is related to sailing and is on earliest record in the 1500's, though it probably has more ancient roots.  As sailors travled by sea, swallows were seen flying above when land came closer. So a swallow in flight is a sign of land ahead or "safe return home".

I hadn't earned the stripes to wear these birds until I traveled to Europe for the first time last year.  Since, I'm not a sailor, nor are we in WWI a simple trip across the pond was my own modern right of passage.  When I returned home, I realized that Brooklyn had become my home where I found my true love and plan to grow my roots.

Thank you Tom -
